Welcome to the home of Samuel Willis. Amos Griest: "Mr. Willis. This is Margaret Morgan. She is in need of some good friends to keep her safe and to help her on her journey to freedom. Can you assist."
Samuel: "Of Course, Mr. Griest. (Turns to Margaret) Well, nice to meet you Margaret. Please come in, and be quick about it, can't trust anyone this close to the state line." Margaret: "Thank you very much, Sir." Samuel: "Tonight, I'd like you to stay in the barn, then after dawn hide in the cornfield. Slave catchers have been checking my barn recently and the corn is high right now, so you would be safe there." Margaret: "Thank you very much. If I may ask- why are you helping me?" Samuel: "Like my father before me I am a Quaker, and slavery is an absolute sin." Margaret: "Well, bless you, Mr. Willis, and good night." Samuel hands Margaret a bowl of soup and a blanket. Margaret heads out towards the barn to settle down for the evening. She takes her time enjoying the meal, blows out a candle, and lays her head down for a rest. The sleep is short lived, though, as Samuel wakes her, tapping her shoulder. Samuel: "Margaret, psssst, psssst! Wake up... you've got to find somewhere to hide. There's a slave catcher searching my home... he says he is looking for a runaway from the Morgan Plantation." Margaret: "Okay, Mr. Willis, but where should I hide?" Samuel: "You can either have to find a hay bale to hide behind or hide in the rows of stalks in the cornfield." Margaret: "Alright, Mr. Willis, I'll hide in the........" You have a choice to make in continuing your journey. Will you hide out in the barn and face the chance of being caught if Edward Prigg searches it? Or will you hide out in the Cornfield where you can take off and run if you see someone coming? |
